Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of multiple diseases. Nausea is an urge to vomit while vomiting is the irrepressible reflex that causes anti peristalsis movement of the esophagus and expels the stomach content out of the mouth.
Both conditions can also occur due to side effects of various cancer medications. It occurs in men, children, and women. However, pregnant women and cancer patients suffer mainly from them.
What are the causes of nausea and vomiting?
Nausea and vomiting can occur during the first trimester of pregnancy, or due to severe pain.
However, there are multiple causes of nausea and vomiting. Both conditions can occur separately or together.

- Celiac disease
- Crohn’s disease
- Overconsumption of alcohol
- Intestinal obstruction
- Viral infection
- Liver failure
- Brain tumor
- Exposure to chemicals

Nausea and vomiting can occur due to many other illnesses or infections.
Viral infection and food poisoning are the main causes of nausea and vomiting in children.
High fever, overeating, and indigestion are also among the common cause of vomiting in children.
Pregnant women feel nauseated during the first trimester of their pregnancy. Different types of smells also bring a feeling of nausea to these women – however this symptom also occurs in people who are not pregnant.
When to see a doctor?
In case of prolonged illness, immediately see your doctor.
Children under 6 years must seek intense care, if their vomiting is accompanied by diarrhea, fever, dehydration, weakness or if the child hasn’t urinated for 5-6 hours. Immediately seek emergency care if vomiting has lasted for more than a day.
Adults should also seek emergency care if their nausea or vomiting is accompanied by headache, fever, abdominal pain, and weakness.
How to treat nausea and vomiting?
There are many ways to get ease from vomiting and nausea, but if these conditions are getting prolonged, you need to consult your doctor.
Drink filtered and cold water
Eat light foods like plain bread
Avoid oily, salty, and spicy foods
Drink liquids slowly
Do not overeat
Eat small meal portions
Drink ginger, fennel, or green tea
Take plenty of rest
Avoid taking solid food
Eat light food in small portions
Take plenty of fluids and stay hydrated
Do not take any medications that can upset your stomach
Maximize the intake of oral rehydration solutions with the advice of your doctor
If nausea and vomiting are due to cancer, surgery, or certain medications – they will be treated with some drug therapy.
Other causes can be treated with medications, but it is recommended to consult your doctor before using these medications.
For nausea, you need to eat small meal portions slowly.
Take a rest after eating. Eating a high protein diet before bed will also give you some benefits.
In case of vomiting, avoid acidic juices or drinks.

Take ginger tea or ginger with your meal.
Drinking soda will also give you ease from vomiting.
Only eat food when you are feeling less nauseated. Do not drink water or juices with meals – instead, take those drinks in between the meals.
If nausea or vomiting is due to motion sickness, looking straight from the car windshield will benefit you. Similarly, do not allow your children to play video games in the car. Avoid playing and eating at the same time.
