Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that results in pimples and red spots on your face, chest, shoulders, and back. It occurs when hair follicles get clogged with oil or dead skin cells. It is most common in teenagers than adults. The acne treatment is possible even at home, but it is a slow process.
The pimples heal slowly, so it is good to start their treatment immediately.

Acne usually appears on those areas of skin where more oil or sebaceous glands are present. Hair follicles attach to these oil glands produce whiteheads. Gradually, it is filled with dirt and makes blackheads. It is congested with bacterial cells, dirt, and oil.
The most common causes of acne include:
- Bacterial infection
- Inflammation of skin
- Excess production of oil by sebaceous glands
- Clogging of hair follicles with bacterial cells and oil
Additionally, the following factors may contribute to worsening the acne:
Hormonal changes during puberty produce more sebum or oil due to the activation of androgens. The increase in functionality of androgens increases the production of sebum which results in the formation or worsening of acne.
Dietary changes like excessive intake of carb-rich food may also lead to acne development. However, more research is required to examine this cause of acne.
The use of certain drugs like corticosteroids or testosterone may also contribute to worsening acne. Sometimes stress is also linked with acne, but actually, stress is not a cause of acne. If you already have an acne problem stress will make it worst.
Sometimes following factors are linked with acne, but they have no effect on the development of acne:
- Oily foods
- Dirty skin
If your acne is spreading to nearby areas on your face or body or making marks – you need to consult your dermatologist. A dermatologist will help you control acne. He will prescribe you the medications to avoid scarring and damage to your skin.
Usually, it requires a few months to years to see the results. Acne is treated by giving antibacterial medications. These medications also reduce the production of oil on the skin. Your doctor will prescribe you the medication depending upon:
- Your age
- Severity of symptoms
- Type of acne
Different types of topical medications are recommended by dermatologists. It includes Retinoids, antibiotics, Dapsone gel, and creams containing Azelaic acid and Salicylic acid.
Different oral medications like antibiotics, oral contraceptives, and Isotretinoin are used to treat moderate to severe acne.
Therapies work for some people. These therapies include light therapy, chemical peel, and steroid injections.
Some doctors also use special tools to remove or extract the whiteheads or blackheads from the skin. It improves the skin’s appearance but later on, left scars on the skin.
Home remedies for acne treatment
Following home remedies can be used for acne treatment.
Increase intake of vitamin A, E, and iron are linked with reducing severe acne. But more studies are required to confirm its linkage.
Mild to moderate acne can also be treated by simply applying tea tree oil to infected areas of the skin.
Polyphenols from tea are also considered beneficial for reducing oil production on the skin. But during studies – these compounds were extracted from tea rather than consumed directly. So their exact mechanism and effectiveness are unknown.
Moisturizers containing aloe vera also have a soothing impact on acne.
How to prevent acne?
The following tips may help you avoid acne:
- Use a mild acne soap to wash your face.
- Do not burst the pimples or rub them. It will further cause the redness of the skin and leaves marks on it.
- Do not touch your skin again and again. Wash your hands before touching or applying anything to your face.
- Do not use the towels or face sponges of some other person. It may contain sebum or germs.
- Always remove your makeup and wash your face before sleeping.
- Try to use oil-free cosmetics and other products.
- Keep your skin and hair clean to avoid the excessive production of oil.
- Avoid sun exposure and try to keep yourself dry in humid climates.
- Avoid stress as it may worsen acne.
